An exhibition brought together by The Royal British Legion Ypres Branch. It features the different organisations that come together in Ypres to bring about the act of Remembrance.
The exhibition takes you through time, from the birth of The Royal British Legion and the subsequent formation of the Ypres Branch, 90 years ago to the present day.
On our brief review of history, we encounter the Ypres League, the Eton Memorial School, the Saint George’s Memorial Church and the pilgrimages of the 1920s and 1930s.
The exhibition is held in Het Vleeshuis in Ypres, the site of the former Ypres Salient War Museum.
Contributors to the exhibition include:
- Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC)
- In Flanders Field Museum
- Last Post Association
- National Memorial Arboretum
- School of History of the University of Kent in cooperation with Gateways to the First World War
- The Royal British Legion (TRBL)
- The Poppy Factory
Amongst the fascinating items on display are a CWGC bronze sword, one of the first bugles used in the Last Post ceremony and original Poppy Appeal posters.
The focal point of the exhibition is a Field of Remembrance, where visitors can plant a poppy in remembrance of their loved ones. These poppies will eventually be transplanted in The Flanders’ Field of Poppies at the Ramparts above the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial at the beginning of November.
Visitors will also be given the opportunity to make their own TRBL poppy and participate in the ‘Post It’ wall.
Social media in various forms will be used throughout the fortnight.
Tea, coffee and soft drinks will be available from our ‘vintage’ coffee corner.
The exhibition includes a contribution from Gateways to the First World War, written by Professor Mark Connelly, on the subject of Ypres and Its British Community, 1919-1939.
