A day of talks and workshops at Canterbury Cathedral Lodge exploring German and Austrian experiences of the First World War. Talk with experts on the history of the war and get advice on locating records and archives. Meet our translation panel, led by Dr Heide Kunzelmann and Dr Ruth Martin from the University of Kent's Department of German, and bring along your own historical sources for analysis.
Speakers include Yvonne Cresswell (Manx National Heritage), Professor Ulf Schmidt (University of Kent), Professor Matthew Stibbe (Sheffield Hallam University), Dr Alexander Watson (Goldsmiths, University of London) and Professor David Welch (University of Kent). The day will involve talks on Germany and Austria during the First World War as well as the experiences of Germans and Austrians living in Britain.
Professor Welch is the author of Germany and Propaganda in World War I. Pacifism, Mobilization and Total War (I.B. Tauris, 2014). Dr Watson is the author of Ring of Steel: Germany and Austria-Hungary at War, 1914-1918.

Parking
Canterbury City Council provides a Park and Ride scheme for visitors to the city centre for £3 a day. More details can be found on the Park and Ride webpage.
Alternatively, reduced cost parking vouchers, valid in a number of city centre car parks, can be purchased from Canterbury Cathedral Lodge reception on the day of the event. Vouchers cost £6 for 24 hours and can be used in the following car parks: Queningate (102 spaces) / Longport (105) / Castle Row (87) / Pound Lane (148) /St Radigunds (304).
