Join us for two days of community research events on 1st - 2nd June 2018 at Westgate Hall in Canterbury exploring the experiences of POWs and internees during the First World War.
During the First World War thousands of soldiers and civilians spent time in captivity, many for the duration of the conflict. Gateways to the First World War is supporting a new project led by Westgate Community Trust Canterbury, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), investigating the experiences of camp life and the cultural pursuits that Allied prisoners developed behind the barbed wire.

Gateways to the First World War presents a free study day bringing together some of the latest academic research on internees and prisoners of war. The event will include talks from Professor Matthew Stibbe (Sheffield Hallam University), Dr Oliver Wilkinson (University of Wolverhampton) and Dr Emma Hanna (University of Kent). 10.30 – 3pm.

Westgate Community Trust will be hosting a workshop, lecture and concert as part of the Hidden Culture in Captivity project.
Workshop from 11am – 2pm, drop-in, free admission, refreshments available. An explore and discover workshop for all ages: find out about the varied experiences of prisoners of war, help us unearth their stories and connections to Canterbury.
