Abbey United Reformed Church, 1 Abbey Water, Romsey, Hampshire, SO51 8EJ
Travel back a hundred years and discover what Romsey would have been like during World War One, find out what it would have been like for a nurse or soldier living in France serving on the front line.
The Abbey United Reformed Church will be ending their two-year research project on how the town was affected during the Great War by taking part in this year’s Romsey Festival with an exhibition on the research they have discovered.
On display will be some of the stories from the Romsey men who served, along with some of the women's war stories that can be traced thanks to the British Red Crosse's VAD database and they will be inviting you to take a walk round the town to discover just where some of these stories originate from.
Also available to experience on the 1st July will be the new Virtual Reality experiences of the Battlefields brought to life by Sibro, the leading educational Virtual Reality company in the UK. Throughout the Saturday those visiting will have an opportunity to try out the VR which is making its way into classrooms throughout the UK and learn more about this educational experience.
Talking about the project, lead Historian Sarah Stewart said that it had been a pleasure to have been asked to run the project on behalf of the church. “I have discovered some truly incredible stories about some remarkable men and women and it makes me proud to come from this town. It is only right that this brave community is remembered and our exhibition is the start of making sure this research is not lost again.”
Research will continue after the exhibition and be held on the project's website where you can also find more details about the exhibition which is running from the 1st – 5th July and will be open from 10 – 16:00 every day.
