Behind The Lines Theatre Company have been exploring the life of actor Basil Hallam with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund First World War: Then and Now Scheme.
In April 2017 Ali Child and Rosie Wakley, along with three young spoken word artists visited Arras, Albert and Couin to trace the events leading up to Basil Hallam’s death in a kite balloon accident in August 1916 and find his grave.
The end result of their project is a theatre piece, ‘Fall of Duty’ which you can see at the Edinburgh Fringe in August at Sweet Venues Grassmarket.
Before that, the show is being performed at the King’s Head Theatre, Islington at 5pm on 15th and 16th July.
The play begins in Brighton as middle aged academic, Sue, issues an ultimatum to her son Jack. Either he gets a job and supports himself, or he becomes her research assistant in a project about Basil Hallam.
For Behind The Lines ‘Fall of Duty’ is their second HLF supported project. In 2014 they researched male impersonators in music hall during the First World War and produced a show ‘All the Nice Girls’ which toured all around the UK. ‘All the Nice Girls’ is being performed on 6th July at the Russell-Cotes Museum Bournemouth. http://russellcotes.com/event/all-the-nice-girls/
