December 2014 was the 100th anniversary of the legendary 'Christmas Truce' on the Western Front. Gateways' Professor Mark Connelly and Dr Emma Hannaa have both conducted extensive research into the event, and were busy in the run-up to the anniversary with talks, media appearances and articles. Emma explored the myths and realities of the Christmas truce in this Gateways blogpost, while Mark discussed the controversial Sainsburys Christmas advert in an article for BBC History Extra.
Gateways to the First World War ended the year with an event at the University of Kent exploring 'Representations of the Christmas Truce'. Mark and Emma were joined by Dr Peter Grant from City University, and discussed the changing representations of the Christmas Truce over the last century. We hope to be able to publish a video of the event here soon.
