A trio of exciting events to share and discover The Boys on the Plaque, a project exploring the local experiences and wider effects of World War One on Brighton & Hove’s community.
Heritage Open Day drop-in event: Thursday 10 September, 1-4pm. Free.
Fabrica gallery, in collaboration with arts and heritage organisation Strike a Light, will be hosting a free, drop-in open day at the former Holy Trinity Church to highlight The Boys on the Plaque project, which seeks to discover more about an original commemorative plaque in Fabrica (formerly Holy Trinity Church) that remembers 95 local soldiers who fought and fell during World War I. Part of the nationwide Heritage Open Days free events across England and Wales, the day will offer art activities, information displays, talks, and free afternoon tea in a relaxed and sociable environment.
Our volunteer researchers will be on hand to share what they've found out about The Boys on the Plaque, and we'd like to invite visitors to bring their own family stories and keepsakes from WWI to share with us. See the full list of names commemorated on our blog – get in touch if you recognise a name! boysontheplaque.wordpress.com
Film Screening: Thursday 10 September, 7.30pm. £8 / £6 conc.
Our Heritage Open Days event will be followed by an evening film screening of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, with a live score by artist collective Partial Facsimile. A masterpiece of the German Expressionist movement that was first released in 1920, the script was inspired by various experiences from the lives of writers Janowitz & Mayer, both pacifists who were left distrustful of authority after their experiences with the military during WWI.
Free popcorn and a low cost bar make this a welcoming and relaxed event for all.
Walking Tour: Friday 11 September, 6-7.30pm. Free.
This walking tour around the Lanes area of the city will connect people with local places associated with WWI, illuminating history from the Home Front in the First World War and share findings of the area with a new picture inspired by the lives and memories of the community.
This walking tour of the local area will start at Fabrica gallery and continue through The Lanes to local points of interest related to WWI. The tour will consider aspects of our local soldiers’ stories and explore connections between them, the church and the city. Led by Dr Geoffrey Mead, an eminent local historian based at University of Sussex
